After months of anticipation, Star Wars Episode VII is finally out in UK cinemas today. Star Wars fans have been talking about this release for many months, many praying it will be a great movie. At Movie Figures, we're off to see it tomorrow morning, so today we're doing our best to avoid any spoilers. But social messages from people who have seen it look favourable, which is great news.
Particularly impressive since the takeover of the Star Wars theme by Disney for a whopping $4 billion,is the sheer range of merchandise on offer inspired by the new film and the previous ones. Never before has a movie generated so much merchandise. Aside from the usual kids toys, there are some truly random associations like Star Wars Cheese Strings, Oranges, shower heads, and Liam at Movie Figures even got caught up and treated himself to a Darth Vader air freshener which he thought would go nice in his black car :P
Aside from the tack, there has been some great news for the more serious collectors out there:
Hot Toys finally secured the rights to produce a wide range of Star Wars 1/6 and 1/4 scale action figures. From firm classic favourites like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia and Boba Fett to new characters like the new style StormTroopers, Kylo Ren, Rey and BB-8. Perhaps best of all is that many of Hot Toys offerings are either already out or coming to the UK soon. If not here already, you can Pre-Order them on our site for a small deposit.
Sideshow has also been busy with a range of statues from numerous brands. Their Star Wars offerings are largely focusing on classic characters such as Darth Vader and Boba Fett. Both of these have been added to Sideshow's very popular Premium Format Figure range which shows characters off in 1/4 scale.
Attakus has made a new set of 1/10 scale statues to add to their Elite Collection of statues. Again, these tend of focus on the original characters and some are small scale versions of their 1/5 scale statues. Great statues from them include Darth Vader, Boba Fett, StormTrooper, R2-D2, C-3PO, Yoda and Emperor Palpatine.
As well as making a huge amount of lower price range toys, action figures and vehicles like this assorted 10 pack, Hasbro has improved their range of high-end lightsabers. Their new range for 2015 includes great prop replicas of the hero lightsabers used by the characters Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Yoda. With the exception of the Kylo Ren lightsaber, the other three are based on models Hasbro made before. The new 2015 models feature improved gyroscopic movement sensors, brighter blade lights and improved sound effects. The first batch that came to the UK last month swiftly sold out. There are now delays on restocks until January. We strongly suggest pre-ordering if you want to secure one in January.
Needless to say, the above is just scratching the surface of the sheer amount of Star Wars merchandise out there. Disney is clearly working hard on recouping their $4 billion acquisition of the Star Wars brand. But at this rate, we doubt it'll be that long before that price looks like a wise investment! And although we're having to put up with some seriously random Star Wars promoted items, it's great to see some fantastic collectibles and hopefully a top new movie to boot.
